Walk 4. Quarry Wood

A pleasant short stroll with easy gradients. Quarry Wood, which gives its name to local writer Nan Shepherd’s first novel, supports a number of different woodland birds and mammals in an area colonised by birch, rowan and Scots pine. Buzzards can often be heard, and sometimes seen circling overhead from the open parkland area, and the attractive woodland resounds with the drumming of busy woodpeckers and the distinctive two-note song of great tits, particularly in spring and early summer.

You can join beside Cults Primary School or the gateway at the junction of Cairnlee Road East and Earlswells Road. Please observe all carparking restrictions around the school. There is a car park at the side of the road on the road to Hillview Church and at the Church itself. The walk can be joined at any of these points (link path from the Church a bit rocky for the first few yards).

Starting from the gateway at the junction of Cairnlee Road East and Earlswells Road, walk a very short distance along the path to a junction, turn left and then left again at an open space. Follow the path, which undulates initially as it runs through the open space, and continue through the trees alongside the school perimeter road, then alongside the driveway to Hillview Community Church. When you reach a green wire fence, where the path turns right and follow the path beside the fence.

The path then bears right slightly as it leaves the fence. You will then come to a junction with a post with a waymarker on it – turn right. Eventually you will reach Kirk Brae. This is a busy road with no proper pavement. Turn right and then right again into Kirk Brae Avenue, cross over and up steps on the far side of Kirkbrae View to a footpath leading to Cults Avenue. Walk a few yards down Cults Avenue and turn right into a footpath (just before Hillview Crescent). This will lead you back to your staring point.
